Stressful university deadlines were coming up and we had no clear sense of direction. We were the ones who fell into every trap everyone falls into. Just get good grades. Volunteer for a certain number of hours. Do extracurriculars for the sake of doing extracurriculars.

But we were getting the whole thing wrong. What differentiates an applicant isn't the number of hours they volunteered. It isn't what checkboxes they clicked off or what extracurriculars they did. It's about being a unique person. It's about having your own story to share, how everything ties in together to make you, to shape you, the person you are, and how you can communicate all of that.

At the end of the day, it wasn't all those “extra-curriculars” we did that actually got us into the programs we wanted. It was us pursuing our own personal passions and being able to talk about those in our applications. It was our unique experiences. The things we did in our free time with our friends that actually made us passionate.

We wasted so much time doing things just to do them. We could have used those hours shaping our story, doing the things that made us who we are, and communicating that articulately with the admissions officers through our applications.
